Winner of the 2010 Mr Iron Age Contest!

Scott Steinbrenner Jr. won Iron Age's first official bodybuilding competition, the 2010 Mr. Iron Age contest. Scott displayed a very Iron Age physique. Muscular, lean, and healthy he has the kind of physique we're proud to promote. He is reminiscent of a young Larry Scott.

Scott's Bio

I have been training for about 5 years. In that time I have gained about 30 pounds. I train at the local YMCA or at home. It all depends on the day. I currently train on a split. I do chest and back on day 1, shoulders and arms on day 2, and legs and calves on day 3. Then I repeat. I train 6 days per week. I typically do 3 exercises per muscle group at 3-4 sets each. I usually train heavy. I live in Hanover PA, I am 26 years old and 140 pounds. This contest has helped give me extra energy in my workouts, giving me something to work towards. I also have never been in a competition so I have learned more about contest preparation.

Shawn Perine:

Size - 5
Symmetry - 6
Shape - 7
Muscularity - 5
Posing and General Appearance - 6
Total: 28

Comments: Good natural shape. Back has the potential to be impressive. Needs a little more work on the lower body. What amazes me is that if you told me these photos were taken in the early 60's I'd believe it. Overall a very good look- keep doing what you're doing!

Dave Mastorakis:

Size - 5
Symmetry - 7
Shape - 5
Muscularity - 6
Posing and General Appearance - 6
Total: 29

Comments: More complete in preparation. Shaved and oiled is good. Also leanness looks good and gives a greater muscle appearance.

Richard Baldwin:

Size 7
Symmetry 8
Shape 7
Muscularity 7
Posing and General Appearance 8

Bob Gallucci:

Size – 5

Good overall size on the entire body

Symmetry – 8

Symmetry is your greatest strength. I really like the flow of the physique from arms, back, chest, legs, etc. Keep training with symmetry in mind and you will always have a championship physique

Shape – 7

Very good shape of your physique. Your symmetry compliments the shape of the arms, legs, calves, v-shape.

Muscularity -7

Again, a very high quality of your physique. You possess very good muscularity and separation which I am sure is even sharper than these photos demonstrate.

Posing and General Appearance –7

Posing looked very good. Watch your head position in the back double arm and the choice poses. Otherwise, your lines were fine and I think you did a great job posing.

Total: 34

Comments: A most deserving winner for the first Mr. Iron Age contest.

Iron Age's Interview with Mr. Iron Age Scott Steinbrenner Jr.

Iron Age: Tell us a little about your backround. Your age, where you grew up, what sports you were interested in, and where your interest in weight training came from.

Scott Steinbrenner: I am 27 years old and I lived in Maryland (Glen Burnie and Towson) until I was 11, and then moved to Hanover, PA and have been here ever since. As a child I was interested in baseball and soccer. Once I became a teenager I lost interested in sports all together and spent most of my time drawing or writing music. My interest in weight training came from a few friends who were lifting and sort of inspired me to do the same. I was probably around 110 pounds or less and really wanted to just look better and healthier. With some of my friends help I began learning some basic exercises and built an interest in bodybuilding of the 60’s-80’s.

Iron Age: When did you first pick up weight training and what were your early workouts like?

Scott Steinbrenner: I was 21 when I first started weight lifting. My early workouts were a lot of trial and error. I basically worked muscle groups separately. I would train 6 days a week and do two muscle groups, twice per week. I would over do it sometimes or chose the wrong exercises. I never would do a full body weight training workout and I still don’t to this day. Even in the beginning since my main interest was “looking better” I kept symmetry in mind as I trained and would do sculpting exercises, probably more so than power exercises.

Iron Age: Did you have early success? Would you consider yourself an easy or hard gainer?

Scott Steinbrenner: After some time I started to notice improvements which inspired me to keep training. I would have body parts develop better and faster than others. Every improvement in my physique made me want more and really helped to keep me dedicated. I am definitely a hard gainer. For my body type I typically need to use heavier resistance to see improvement, and I can use lower resistance to maintain. Although my diet is mostly clean, I still to this day have a hard time keeping it up and getting enough calories, protein, carbs, etc. With my body type the only thing that I really try to limit is junk food.

Iron Age: Aside from building a fine physique, what has BB done for you? What are some positive things you’ve gotten out of it?

Scott Steinbrenner: Some of the positives that I have gotten out of BB are basically more confidence, a healthier lifestyle, more friends.

Iron Age: What is your current training like? How has it evolved since your early workouts?

Scott Steinbrenner: I have by now found out what works best for me. My workouts are 6 days a week, hitting each muscle group twice per week. I do 3 exercises for 3 sets each for each muscle group. Most of the time I use heavy resistance--going anywhere from 12-4 reps on a given set. My current workout routine is Day 1 Chest/Back, Day 2 Shoulders/Arms, Day 3 Legs. Honestly, I do not specifically train abs or obliques often.

Iron Age: What are the most important things you’ve learned from bodybuilding?

Scott Steinbrenner: I have learned to just keep going even if you don’t think you can and I have applied that attitude to other things in my life. I have also learned that it takes a lot of dedication to get to a point where you want to be and that bodybuilding is a lifelong commitment of constant changes and adjustments.

Iron Age: How much time do you typically devote per week to BB?

Scott Steinbrenner: Each workout is usually 45 minutes to an hour so at the max 6 hours.

Iron Age: What did you do differently in your preparation for the Mr. Iron Age contest?

Scott Steinbrenner: The contest was a whole new experience for me. I really didn’t do much different as far as preparation. I basically just went to the gym everyday with a little more intensity than usual.

Iron Age: What is your typical diet like and did you change anything for your contest preparation?

Scott Steinbrenner: My diet is not too strict. I don’t limit carbs or fats or anything like that. One thing I do is try to stick with all organic/natural foods. Things that I typically eat everyday are spinach, cottage cheese, sunflower kernels, tuna, and milk. Other foods will vary from day to day. I do have occasional junk food but not too often.

Iron Age: What do you feel you need to improve? How do you plan to do it?

Scott Steinbrenner: I need to improve mostly in my diet. I need to make sure that I am getting more than what I need in order to gain a few more pounds of quality muscle.

Iron Age: Do you plan to defend your title next year? What will you need to do to win?

Scott Steinbrenner: As of right now I plan to defend it. I am also looking into entering another competition next summer. Again, I need to improve on the quantity of my diet and just eat.

Iron Age: What advice would you give a young teenager just starting out? What would you do differently if you could go back and start over?

Scott Steinbrenner: I would tell them to read and learn as much as they can about bodybuilding, try new things and exercises out to see what works for them, have a clean diet, and stay positive if you get in a plateau and just have fun working out. If I could go back the number one thing I would change would be to start training earlier, as a teenager.

Iron Age:Thank you Scott and good luck next year!
